Bird Watchers Flock to New Jersey

Pack your binoculars. Put film in your camera. Seize the rare opportunity to experience why New Jersey is a popular site for bird enthusiasts.

As a major route on the Atlantic Flyway, New Jersey’s birding sites offer spectacular views of dozens of species including shore birds, northern diamondback terrapins and blue herons.

Experience the World Series of Birding in Cape May, hosted each year by the New Jersey Audubon Society, and count as many species as possible during a 24-hour period. The New Jersey Audubon Society also operates the spectacular Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point.

Another fantastic observation site is the 43,000-acre Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in southern New Jersey. Administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this coastal habitat protects migratory birds and provides valuable prospects for the birding industry.

Open year-round, another sizeable bird sanctuary resides at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area in Highlands. The Meadowlands in Lyndhurst is another site that is home to more than 265 different species of birds and is recognized as a major migratory fly-over and resting preserve.
